Tootsie Review

I was privileged with tickets to go and watch the Beenleigh Theatre Group production of Tootsie at the Crete Street Theatre on Monday 1st June, and I must say it was a blast!

The well known comedy Tootsie musical stage play was a laugh-out-loud humorous theatrical entertaining hit. It seamlessly blended humor with sharp, heartfelt observations of identity and ambition in the entertainment industry.

The notoriously difficult-to-work-with actor Michael Dorsey (Adam Goodall) always getting fired, found it difficult to find work as an actor. So, in a desperate bid, and a last ditch effort at making his dreams come true... he disguises himself as a woman, “Dorothy Michaels.”  His meteoric rise to stardom soon had audiences enamoured while he was falling in love with his co-star Julie (Heloise Ruinard).

He soon realises that maintaining his greatest acting success is a lot harder than he anticipated.

When we walked into the theatre, we were welcome to a beautiful backdrop of luxurious glistening red curtains hanging in the full length of the stage. Then Ron (Kristian Weber) fancily trots on stage and says, we have only one chance to take a photo of him “right now” and then clearly lets us know he is the debonair director of his cast as he discreetly tells us to turn off our mobile phones or put them away.

Then he interacts with the audience and walks amongst us and between the seats, walking directly in front of me, laugh-out-loud.

The props were enough to know where everyone was at all times and the costumes were colourful and blended in perfectly with every scene.

It was performed incredibly well by all the actors, with some witty and sharp tongue-twisting lyrical highlights like “What's Gonna Happen.”

But my greatest admiration goes to Adam Goodall who played (Michael Dorsey/Dorothy). What an outstanding performance, now that was great acting.

Credit to the Creatives, (Nicholas Joy, Jade Enright, Nikki Bovey, Tianna Paget) for the clever construction and bringing the whole thing together.

If you want to see a funny musical play this is a good one to see.  It was a delight to watch this play and I would happily watch it again. It had us all in stitches.

It will be at the Crete Street Theatre from 5 June – 20 June 2026. So, grab your tickets!
