What started as a routine day on the water for Gold Coast police has ended in a heartwarming rescue that’s captured the hearts of officers – and led to a happy new beginning for one lucky pup.

Jacobs Well Police Beat officers were out on the water with Water Police conducting community engagement with boat owners earlier this month when their patrol was suddenly interrupted. Two fishermen waved them down, reporting a struggling puppy in the water nearby.

Senior Constable Zoe Tidswell, who was on board at the time, said they acted quickly.

“He was ice cold, half frozen, and I honestly wasn’t sure he was going to make it. As soon as I had him in my arms, I just fell in love with him,” Senior Constable Tidswell said.

The puppy, later named Bailey, was rushed to shore and taken straight to the vet for emergency care.

Thanks to a microchip, officers were able to contact Bailey’s owner, who came to the police beat a short time later.

"He was so grateful Bailey was alive. He explained Bailey was one of a litter of puppies on his boat and somehow managed to fall or jump off without anyone noticing,” Senior Constable Tidswell said.

But what happened next was something even the officers didn’t expect.

“The owner could see the bond Bailey and I had instantly – and he asked if I’d like to adopt him. He told me all he wanted was a loving home for his pups,” Senior Constable Tidswell said.

Since that day, Bailey and his new best friend have been inseparable. Gold Coast Police said while the incident could have ended in tragedy, the quick response from officers and the kindness of the fishermen helped bring about a happy ending.

Bailey is now thriving in his new home, showered with love and attention – and never far from the side of the officer who saved him.
